Three students at Institute of Technology Carlow Wexford Campus - Angie Young, Angela Sanina and Una Murphy – are celebrating after they received an award for their short film which was selected from more than 3,000 applicants to the 6th Wexford Documentary Film Festival that took place at the weekend (21st-23rd September). All three students are in their second year of the Bachelor of Arts in Art degree course.

The Journey was created in response to the 8th Amendment Referendum earlier this year and  screened yesterday (Sunday 23rd September) in the 3 Minute Film Challenge that featured 22 of the best short films selected from over 3,000 films submitted to the festival by filmmakers from more than 40 countries. The three students were presented with The 3 minute challenge Student Award, which the festival bestows on a student or students in 3rd level education who make a documentary film under three minutes in length. The award was presented by Kevin Ryan of the Wexford Documentary Film Festival and co-founder of Studio Nine, who himself is a former graduate of the art and design course at Institute of Technology Carlow Wexford Campus.

“The festival received applicants from as far afield as Iran, the Netherlands, China, Colombia, India, as well as the UK. The girls did extremely well to be accepted. All the staff and students are thrilled for them here, especially as they were only in first year at the time”, said Dr. Ciara Healy Musson, the students’ lecturer at Institute of Technology Wexford Campus.

The Wexford Documentary Film Festival takes place every year in Kilmore Quay and provides the opportunity to see the best of award winning national and international documentary films. In tune with the festival’s strong focus on films that explore social, political and environmental issues, the festival also hosts a number of lively post screening discussions with filmmakers, invited guest speakers and representatives from local organizations. Screenings are free and open to the public.
