Institute of Technology Carlow, Tuesday, May 14th - Seven seems to be a particularly lucky number for IT Carlow this year. Only weeks after seven of the IT Carlow BA Sport & Exercise (Soccer) students lined out for the Ireland Colleges squad, the same seven players have been selected for Ireland’s Soccer Team for the World University Games, due to take place in Kazan, Russia this summer. Jamie Carr, a 4th year BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) student will captain the Irish squad.

The World University Games is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city. It is second only to the Olympic Games with more than 9,000 student athletes and volunteers gathering from over 170 countries for 12 days of sports competition.

As well as a strong IT Carlow student representation on the team, Paul O’Reilly, Course Leader of the BA Sport and Exercise (Soccer) course has been selected as assistant coach to the Ireland Soccer Team. Speaking after the appointment, Paul commented ‘ it’s a great achievement for the Institute as a whole and indeed for the individual players, it will possibly be the pinnacle of their playing careers. I’m delighted to be involved with such a prestigious event and will be working hard over the next eight weeks to prepare the team’.

In addition Gary Sweeney (Mayo) a 4th year Sports Management and Coaching student at IT Carlow has been selected as video analyst for the squad.
