12 Transition year students attended a 3 day “Engineering Your Future” programme at IT Carlow recently. The programme was organised by IT Carlow School of Engineering and Engineers Ireland. 7 of the 12 students were from Carlow – Gary Kelly and Keane Nolan from St. Mary’s CBS, Niamh O’Donoghue and Maria O’Dwyer from St. Leo’s College, Conall Ó Se from Gaelcolaiste, Mateusz Plata from CBS Carlow and Thomás Walsh from St. Mary’s Academy.
The programme is aimed at giving a meaningful experience of engineering both at college and in the work place. It is intended to give students an insight into the skills and career opportunities available by studying engineering at third level and thus helping them make informed subject choices.
Edwin Landzaad, Head of the Department of the Built Environment, said that the Transition Year students were exposed to a range of Engineering options, including Civil, Mechanical, Electronic and Aeronautical. “We wanted to expose the students to a range of experiences that balanced theory, hands- on practical exercises and field- trips. We also threw in a healthy dose of fun social activities.”
“The programme was a great success and we will definitely host it again next year in May. Students who have an interest in Engineering and who will be in Transition Year next year should definitely pencil this programme into their calendars for next year.”
