Institute of Technology Carlow, Wednesday April 10th 2013 - The Institute of Technology Carlow was delighted to welcome Professor Marie Cassidy, State Pathologist to give a special guest lecture to staff and students from the Department of Science and Health. Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of IT Carlow, introduced Professor Cassidy to a packed lecture theatre and thanked her for taking the time to share her expertise in Forensic Pathology with IT Carlow students.
Prof. Cassidy described the role of forensic pathology as part of the ‘what happened’ specialty, illustrating the process that takes place to establish cause of death and the multidisciplinary team involved in the investigation of a suspicious death of an Irish citizen.
The silence in the theatre throughout the hour and a half was replaced by rapturous applause as Prof. Cassidy concluded her lecture. An engaging question and answer session gave students further insight in to the rare and intriguing role of the State Pathologist.
Dr. David Ryan, Head of the Department of Science and Health at IT Carlow described the visit as ‘a brilliant insight in to the importance of science in medico-legal investigations of death and a unique experience for Department of Science and Health students here at IT Carlow. I’d like to thank everyone involved, especially IT Carlow biochemistry and forensic science lecturer Rosemary O’Hara for organising this event today.
Students lucky enough to get a seat in the lecture theatre spoke warmly of the event afterwards. Eddie Lanigan from Carlow, a second year student of the BSc in Analytical and Forensic Science course, commented ‘It was fantastic to have a person of Prof. Cassidy’s experience and profile talking to us. It’s great she is so enthusiastic about sharing her professional expertise with undergraduates interested in the field - I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture’.
