IT Carlow Team Selected to Compete in Finals of  Global ‘Smart Society’ Challenge

IT Carlow’s Dr. Chris Meudec and student Dominik Chomic have been selected as one of 20 finalist teams in Fi Ware’s global cloud and app competition ‘Smart Society Challenge’. The Smart Society Challenge will award a total of € 200,000 to find the most innovative projects that pursue societal benefits such as education, health and social inclusion, using FI-LAB, which produces innovative, open cloud-based infrastructure for cost-effective creation and delivery of future internet applications and services, at a scale not seen before.

With more than 300 projects submitted from around the world and just 20 shortlisted, Meudec and Chomic’s entry is the only Irish finalist. The idea for the project came from Dr. Chris Meudec who proposed it and supervised his student Dominik Chomic during his final year of study for a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree in Software Development (CW238).

The App, called ‘My people Care’ helps those caring for others to coordinate vital medical and other day-to-day information. Dr. Chris Meudec explains ‘Being a non-professional carer (e.g. a son, a mother) is not an easy task: one has to juggle their own personal life while looking after the needs of someone else. Increasingly the care of many people is shared among many in the community: family members, friends, neighbours, professionals… thus the coordination of the care can be problematic’.

The app provides mechanisms to upload the user’s data to a custom, cloud-based server which allows other users such as doctors or family members to see current medication of the patient, forthcoming appointments or even simple medical measurements (such blood pressure, blood sugar levels). For more information, the IT Carlow team can be followed @MyPeopleCare.

The finals will take place at this year’s ‘Campus Party’ in Spain, an annual 7-day, 24-hour festival connecting online communities, gamers, programmers, bloggers, governments, universities and students. IT Carlow would like to wish Dr. Chris Meudec and student Dominik Chomic all the best for the finals!
