The Department of the Built Environment & Extended Campus will hold its Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics on Thursday 21st August 2014 from 9.30 to 12.30. A pass (which is set at 55%) in this examination fulfils the Maths entry requirement for our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering programme as an alternative to the Leaving Certificate Honours Mathematics requirement of HC3. Please note that this exam is not obligatory for entrance to this programme nor are extra CAO points awarded if successful in the exam.

The Maths Exam will consist of one 3 hour exam paper and will include questions on the following topics:

  • Trigonometry
  • Logs & Indices
  • Differentiation
  • Algebra

It is recommended that all students sitting this Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics familiarise themselves with the sample paper which will shortly be available at this link, as the layout and content of the paper can differ significantly to those of the Leaving Certificate.

In advance of the examination, the Institute will be holding an INTENSIVE PREPARATORY COURSE for applicants intending to sit this examination. The course will run for two days in August (Monday 18th & Tuesday 19th August 2014). As well as preparing students for the special examination, our lecturer will demonstrate the relevance of mathematics in engineering giving useful illustrative examples.
