Institute of Technology Carlow has launched its Higher Diploma in Applied Social Studies in Professional Social Care for Peter McVerry staff. This programme provides an opportunity for students to study for a one-year Higher Diploma in Applied Social Studies in Professional Social Care and is designed for graduates of non-social care disciplines who are working, or who wish to work in the social care sector. Successful applicants must undertake 800 hours of supervised professional practice as part of this Higher Diploma.
Social care involves working with marginalised or disadvantaged people in a caring, compassionate and non- judgemental way. Social care work is based on interpersonal relationships which require empathy, strong communication skills, self-awareness and an ability to use critical reflection. Teamwork and interdisciplinary work are also important. This Higher Diploma enables students to engage with a wide range of topics, social care practice approaches and decision-making processes. This programme provides students with the knowledge, practice-learning experience and skills to enable them to function as competent, reflective and accountable workers in the field of social care.
