History was made in County Wicklow today as Institute of Technology Carlow conferred almost 200 higher education graduates at Wicklow County Campus - its largest number to-date.
Addressing the graduates from programmes ranging from higher certificates to masters degrees, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of Institute of Technology Carlow said, “Today you become part of a larger community of over 1,000 Wicklow County Campus graduates, joining over 50,000 Institute of Technology Carlow alumni. Graduates pursuing successful careers in all walks of life, all over the globe. My warmest congratulations to all our new graduates from Wicklow County Campus”.
Dr. Mulcahy was joined across the three ceremonies by Mr. Frank Curran, the Chief Executive Officer of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Shay Cullen, the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, and Cllr. Daire Nolan, Vice-Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District. Also in attendance at the ceremony were elected representatives, and representatives from regional businesses, community organisations and state agencies.
In her address, Dr. Mulcahy, acknowledged the vision and dedication of Wicklow County Council and highlighted the role that the Wicklow County Campus has played in acting as a catalyst for development in the county and beyond, stating, “Wicklow County Council had the foresight to invest in this campus over 10 years ago, at a time that coincided with the beginning of the downturn in the global economy and the challenging environment that resulted from this. And it is because of this commitment that Institute of Technology Carlow remains steadfast in its commitment to the further development of Wicklow County Campus”.
Dr. Mulcahy expressed confidence that the strength of the partnership between Institute of Technology Carlow and Wicklow County Council will continue to bring success for the county and region. She continued “we have already achieved so much together and undoubtedly there will be many new opportunities”.
Dr. Mulcahy also took the opportunity to highlight the many achievements of the Institute over the past year, and outlined future plans. Dr. Mulcahy also referenced forthcoming legislation, which will provide the opportunity for the Institute of Technology Carlow to seek re-designation as a Technological University, allowing the Institute achieve its vision for a connected and engaged multi-campus Technological University.
In his address, Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council said, “I’m delighted to be associated with the graduation ceremony here at Wicklow County Campus. It’s a special day for the graduands and their families and for me as it signifies the successful partnership between Wicklow County Council and Institute of Technology Carlow in bringing third-level education to the doorstep of the people of County Wicklow. While I’m just two months into my new role, I’m looking forward to the continued development of Wicklow County Campus as a Centre of Excellence in education, enterprise and innovation, in what is a unique venture for Wicklow County Council, with this third-level facility acting as a catalyst for economic development in the county.”
Since its founding in 1970, Institute of Technology Carlow has generated over 50,000 graduates. It currently ranks as the 4th largest of Ireland’s 14 Institutes of Technology with more than 7,500 enrolments and 800 staff. Institute of Technology Carlow provides higher educational programmes, and research and enterprise development opportunities, through centres in Carlow, Wexford, and Wicklow. The Institute offers more than 80 taught programmes to Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), and boasts the second highest percentage of postgraduates in the IoT sector. Institute of Technology Carlow has the highest percentage of Lifelong Learners in the sector, which reflects the commitment to providing higher educational opportunities for all.
