Top students awarded Academic Scholarships from IT Carlow - Some of Ireland’s most talented young people today received academic scholarships from Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow).
Since 2004 Institute of Technology Carlow has annually celebrated student success and achievement through an Academic Scholarship programme. At this year’s ceremony the Institute awarded 44 academic scholarships for the 2015/2016 academic year to students who have distinguished themselves through their exceptional academic ability. Students representing 14 counties and 33 schools attended with their parents and representatives from their secondary schools.
Amongst the academic scholars were twin sisters Roisin and Caoimhe Simms from Laois who are studying honours degree programmes in early Childhood Education & Care and Sports Management & Coaching, respectively. They were joined by their parents, secondary school principal and guidance counsellor, from Heywood 2nd Level College, for the ceremony.
IT Carlow’s scholarship programme commenced in 2004. The Institute’s Academic Scholarship initiative traditionally saw IT Carlow award one scholarship per course to the student who achieves the highest points in the Leaving Certificate. In a new departure this year, all students with at least 500 Leaving Certificate points will receive an academic scholarship from IT Carlow.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of IT Carlow, said, “Today’s ceremony recognises excellence. Our academic scholarships recognise the significant achievement of our first year students who excelled in the Leaving Certificate and who are now undertaking degree programme across our various faculties. I have no doubt that your academic acumen will contribute greatly to this Institute.”
IT Carlow consistently features highly in the CAO first preferences for Institutes of Technology, according to the Institute, which sees an annual average of 12,000 students apply for up to 70 Higher Certificate and Degree courses via the CAO. Since its founding in 1970, IT Carlow has generated more than 45,000 graduates. It currently ranks as the fourth largest of Ireland’s 14 Institutes with 7,000 enrolments.
