Thirty Games Design students from IT Carlow emerged with five of the top awards from the years Games Fleadh presented by EA executives including Senior Vice President, Bryan Neider.
Nigel Whyte, Head of Computing & Networking Department welcomed students back to campus this morning who scooped five awards including Game Studio Challenge Champions, Best Multiplayer Game, Best Windows Phone 8 Game, Best Windows 8 Game and Best in Visual Engineering. Whyte said "the sheer quality of design and programming has advanced every year since the foundation of the games course at IT Carlow. Our students are highly regarded by the top game studios in the world as evidenced and acknowledged by the sheer amount of awards our students received this week. We are very proud to welcome you back with such a comprehensive collection of awards".
The winning title was created as part of IT Carlow's intellectual property initiative. This four week pilot programme has been introduced to the honours degree by Dr. Daire O'Broin and Ken Power to encourage innovation. Commenting on the IP Project Dr. Broin "the digital games sector demands constant innovation, this pilot programme has exceeded our expectations and we are now exploring embedding innovation studies into our undergraduate course as a key driver to integrate with our expanding post graduate research centre GameCORE"
The winning title The Plunderer was demonstrated to EA executives and utilised Microsoft cloud services to enable multiplayer gameplay on Surface Pro devices. Attendees queued up to play the title which was described by judges as professionally polished.
