The significant contribution to Irish and International Art by several lecturers in the BA Hons. in Art course at IT Carlow’s Wexford Campus School of Arts & Design has been acknowledged at the launch by An Taoiseach of a special publication on Irish art and architecture at Dublin’s Mansion House
Irish and International experts gathered at the weekend for the launch of Art and Architecture of Ireland, an authoritative and fully illustrated account of the art and architecture of Ireland from the early Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. Published by Yale University Press for the Royal Irish Academy and the Paul Mellon Centre, the stunning five-volume edition explores all aspects of Irish art and architecture and provides new insight into every facet of the strength, depth and variety of Ireland’s artistic and architectural heritage. It encompasses: high crosses; installation art; Georgian houses; manuscripts; watercolours; sculptures, photographs, oil paintings, video art and tapestries, amongst other treasures.
Course Director of the BA Hons. in Arts at IT Carlow, Oliver Comerford, along with lecturer colleagues Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Hand, Orla Barry, Anthony Lyttle and Remco de Fouw all feature in volume five of Art and Architecture of Ireland, edited by Catherine Marshall and Peter Murray. This volume covers the work of recent conceptual and digital artists as well as those who used more traditional media. Definitive biographies and profiles of Alanna O’Kelly, Oliver Comerford and Brian Hand all feature in this edition while Orla Barry, Anthony Lyttle and Remco de Fouw are also cited, along with reproductions of their work. Alanna O’Kelly’s work is also used for the cover of volume five, Twentieth Century.
Commenting on the initiative, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said, "The Royal Irish Academy's Art and Architecture of Ireland is a treasure trove that showcases our artistic heritage like never before and is a fitting celebration of our extraordinary, but often unrecognised, visual culture - in painting, in sculpture and in the ultimate social art, architecture. I would like to congratulate those lecturers from IT Carlow's Wexford Campus School of Arts, whose artistic contribution has been recognised in this impressive work”,
Speaking after the launch Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, President of IT Carlow commented, “I offer my warm congratulations to our colleagues at Wexford Campus School of Arts & Design – Oliver Comerford, Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Hand, Orla Barry, Anthony Lyttle and Remco de Fouw - for this great achievement. It is a significant endorsement of their outstanding work and for the incredible teaching talent we have at IT Carlow”.
“To be included in this major publication is a wonderful acknowledgement of the research and practice that these artists and lecturers pursue and supports new learning and knowledge transfer in our teaching. It is a really rich experience for our students and I to work with such an eminent team of lecturers”, said Oliver Comerford, Course Director BA Hons in Art.
